The Rural Voice, 1998-01, Page 56GREY County Federation of Agriculture NEWSLETTER 44610th St., Hanover, Ontario N4N 1 P9 519-364-3050 • The Rural Voice is provided to all Grey County Farmers by the GCFA. Leading a growing community This was the theme of the OFA Convention this year. I believe this will be quite a challenge of ours to carry out. I say "we" because as you probably already know the OFA has a new president. Ed Segsworth from the Halton region was elected in a very narrow margin over Tony Morris as the new president. This will mean a new style of leadership for our organization, as President Ed has already stated. It will mean shared leadership of our "growing community". This is a bold move of anyone in a leadership position. You are never just sure of where the direction of change will take us. To the credit of Past President, Tony Morris, he opened up the world to Ontario agriculture. He was a leader in community development such as Market Grey -Bruce. He attended Asian trade missions with all sectors of the Canadian economy. He brushed shoulders with the influential. He lobbied the power brokers. He embraced the global village. He did the job to the best of anyone. Now the challenge is for all of us to share the leadership that is required of the challenges that Tony made us aware of. It will not be a time for the weak and the meek. I am delighted to be one of Grey County's three Regional Directors on the OFA Board. I am also confident that the shared leadership will be evident in Grey, if for no other reason than we have township federations. You will be playing a key role. Your input will be asked for and expected. It will be in your interest and benefit to be involved. Community by definition means society at large. Our community has changed. Look around. Young and old. Small farms and corporate. Export and domestic. Retired and beginning. Opportunity or defeat is the common thread in our community. It will be up to the residents to tip opportunity in their favour. No one else will do it for us. Let's all work together to put blind fear behind us and the light ahead a beacon that draws us forward.0 Submitted by Ken Furlong GCFA Past President and OFA Regional Director Grey South GREY COUNTY FEDERATION OF AGRICULTURE DIRECTORS' MEETING Thursday, January 22, 1998 1:00 p.m. OMAFRA Boardroom, Markdale Members are welcome to attend.
