The Rural Voice, 1998-01, Page 37Someone can always read it to him.
Putting it down on paper cuts the
bullfeathers and the sheepdip. Then
hand it to him and explain. This way,
he doesn't hear "I want to sell my
house" when what you really mean is
"Can I cash the place before my
creditors catch on?"
7. Talk money in advance, and
what you're getting for the price. Is
the lawyer actually going to do it, or
is he fobbing off the job on some
willing but dim articling clerk? Or
maybe a paralegal? Or the
switchboard operator? Put another
way, do you pay $175 per hour for
YOUR secretary? While you're at it.,
get some other quotes too. You'd get
three quotes for $1,500 worth of
fender bender, but only one quote for
$10,000 worth of legal advice? Are
insurance companies really smarter
than you are?
8. Push. Follow up. This is a lawyer,
not an administrator. If he had no
particular education, merely the
ability to stick like glue to a given
assignment, he'd be a basketball
player, not a lawyer. So he will rely
on you to follow up. If you don't, he
may eventually get around to your
case anyway, but a long legal deal is
an expensive legal deal. A lawyer
once got through the Pearly Gates
solely because the Big Book said he
was 108 years old. "I hope this won't
matter, Pete," he said to the Saint,
"but I'm only 49." Saint Peter ran his
finger down the golden pages. "I see
what's happened," he said, "I
accidentally added your billing
hours."
9. Cut him in on your friends, but
not vice versa. By all means, send
him referrals as a sign of good will,
as a collegial gesture, as a bribe. But
don't let him bring his friends in on
the case without permission. -.If he's
really as good as he claimed he was
in the back of the ambulance, why is
he having trouble now?
9-1/2. Pay your lawyer's bill
promptly. Why? I'll let you figure
that one out on your own!O
