The trends in pork production have been to
specializing in one aspect of production. Jack and
Marg Kroes have gone in the oppositie direction,
deciding to finish their weaners. The trend has long
been toward liquid
manure, but the
Kroeses decided
they wanted to
raise hogs on
straw. The result
is an interesting
new barn. Without
criticizing others,
they have, Marg
says, chosen a
different road, one
which they feel is
the best for them.

A group of 35 chicken producers have decided the logical next
step in their operation is to process their own birds. The result
is the Farm Fresh Poultry Co-operative which opened its
doors in Harriston in November. It's part of a new generation
of co-ops across North America.
