Beef industry pricing archaic: value -based pricing needed
A few weeks ago I had a first-hand
reminder of how urgently the beef
industry pricing needs reform.
We must ask ourselves — what
other commodity in the world takes
their product to market and is at the
mercy of the buyers there that day, to
determine what that product is worth?
The answer is, very few other
commodities, but the beef industry.
Whether it be finished cattle, feeders,
veal, cull cows, bulls or purebred
seedstock, we seem to be consistently
stupid when we try to market them.
Why should honest producers put up
with the volatility of cattle buyers?
I think it is time we stop
auctioning our product and set a
standard price for specific areas of
the industry.

breed magazine recently about value

rid of a marketing system that went
out with the stone ages. As a beef
