The sandy beaches are a mecca for tourists and locals. Boiler Beach is the site of the wreck of the Erie Bell ship. Kincardine's glorious, spectacular, colourful sunsets are said to be the best in the world. When the local farmers are tired and dusty from a long day in the fields, they head to the refreshing lake to cool off. Kincardine's Scottish background is suitable to the frugal by providing many free activities — Wednesday night concerts called "Music in the Park" by the Kincardine Community Concert Band in Dunsmoor Park, the famous Saturday night pipe band parades from Victoria Park to Quinn Plaza and back, and the Sunday night sing -a -longs at Dunsmoor Park. A new feature is the Phantom Piper who plays at the lighthouse every summer evening at sunset. This event was prompted by the legend that a Scottish family was sailing from Bayfield to Kincardine in 1840 when a storm blew up, the lake became very rough, and fearing for their very lives, the father said a prayer and Phantom piper recalls old Kincardine legend started playing his bagpipes. Another piper on shore heard the music and played back in reply, thus guiding the boat safely into the harbour at Penetangore, which is now called Kincardine. Although Kincardine is mostly a tourist town, it is surrounded on three sides by productive farm land. Local farmers and craftspeople are able to sell their harvest produce and handicrafts every summer Saturday in the farmer's market in downtown Victoria Park. The Pine River Cheese Factory, south of town processes local milk into several varieties of cheese. It features an observation deck to allow visitors to see the cheese -making process. McNay's fruit stand with fresh eggs and garden plants and Farrell's apple orchard nearby offer many varieties of fresh fruit. Many local farmers have diversified their incomes with exotic produce such as wild boar, emu, deer, elk and pheasant. Maple syrup is also a native sweet treat.
