The Rural Voice, 1997-06, Page 47Even though the Douglases only have a 20 sow operation, they can still compete with the big producers. These displays that have gotten the attention of literally hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people. At the Winter Fair where their booth is fairly large, with pigs, tools of the trade, feed and other items, they see an average of 4,000 children a day with more adults in the evening. At the CNE they figure they see about 800,000 people in total over the three weeks the CNE is open. Couple that with the people they reach at the Western Fair and other fairs in Ontario, including fairs in Georgetown and Milton, and you have a very substantial number of people they help educate about the pork industry. When they first had their display in 1988 at the Winter Fair, they weren't sure if it was going to work. But as Sharon put it, "It was a hit." Ron also was involved in the second draft of the Code of Practice for pigs in the 1980s. "When the animal welfare movement started in the early '80s, the pork marketing board was one of the first to pick up on it," said Ron. So an ad-hoc committee, called the Animal Care Committee, was formed in 1987 and Ron chaired it for many years. "The goal of the Animal Care Committee was to educate the producers and promote the "You need to be there 365 days a year. You have to stick with it through the market's highs and lows." excellence of animal agriculture," said Ron. Ron has also been very active on OFAC, which was formed in 1987. "In 1986, the Federation of Agriculture first called a meeting, which included all the marketing boards, to figure out what could be done and what should be done about the animal welfare movement. One year later, OFAC was formed," said Ron.
