The Rural Voice, 1997-02, Page 27Bt Corn - There is no question in
my mind that Bt works. In areas of
low borer pressure the yields were
similar, however with increasing
borer pressure, yields go up 4, 8, 11,
16 and 24 bu./ac. I saw the results
this year. At an extra $30/bag for
seed with $3.50 corn, you need 3
bu./ac extra just to cover the extra
cost. When it comes to stalks and
stalk breakage, remember that a soft -
stalked variety is still a soft -stalked
variety, Bt or no Bt. It may not break
over as fast due to the protection
from corn borer, but it will break
down with wind, rain and stalk rot.
Consider this — if Bt corn will
give you an additional 10 bu./ac
and 20" rows will give you
another 10 bu./ac, you will have
gotten the biggest one-time yield
increase since the invention of hybrid
seed corn and supplemental nitrogen
and it was all in your lifetime! I'd
want to be riding this bandwagon
Bt corn combined with
20" rows could give the
biggest one-time yield
increase since hybrids
before everyone else jumps on. There
is going to be a heck of a lot of corn
produced once this becomes an
accepted practise. If you've been
watching this one for a few years
now, it's time you stepped up to the
plate.
As you can see, the rapidity of
change will cause huge logistical
problems for the entire industry. The
technology we use will be changing
almost daily, taxing our minds in our
effort to remain current (especially an
"Abacus Man" like me).
The most profound change well
might be the evolution of the North
American farmer, you guys, (my
clients). I recently read regarding PA:
10 per cent of American farmers are
enthusiastically embracing this
technology; 40 per cent are taking a
"wait 'n see" attitude; the other 50
per cent are hoping they can retire
before they have w deal with it!
This statement is an excellent
indicator of the current trends.
Technology is moving so fast we are
starting to see a division in
management philosophies (grower
classes) much like our social classes.
