If a private landowner calls two or three buyers to bid on his bush, it will depend on whether he picked the right two or three or the wrong two or three as to how much the sale returns. Sometimes, Eccles says, a sawmill will be willing to pay more for a bush if it fills one of their orders. It's difficult for owners of small woodlots to deal in this market, the consultants agree, because they only sell timber a few times in their lifetime, unlike corn or soybeans which they sell every year. But while the most direct return for expert advice is in trek' marking and tendering, Roland feels farmers can gain even more in the long run by having proper advice on what trees to cut. Selling to a buyer who comes knocking at your door may bring you money but can lead to damage to your woodlot that can take years to recover. Some loggers, seeking the maximum return from the minimum of bush, will take every tree allowed under local bylaws that designate the minimum diameter of trees allowed to be cut. It's all legal, he says, "but the destruction is horrific". Speaking of the Woodlot and Sawmill Operators Association he says, "Hopefully we'll be able to get people to realize you have to target cut". The secret of good woodlot management is to take out less timber, but come back more often, says Eccles. That policy allows the woodlot to be logged every 10-15 years for saw logs, every 10 years at least for fuel wood. If a woodlot isn't logged for a long time, then is extensively logged, the damage can be severe, he says. Not enough growing stock may be left for another cut a few years down the road. As well if the forest canopy is opened up, the light may be too bright and bring more branches on the lower part of the trees instead of long, straight, knot -free logs that result when trees reach for the light in a healthy forest. If too many larger trees are removed, there may be damage from sun -scald where the bright sunlight kills off many of the remaining trees meaning it can take many years for the woodlot to recover.
