Although the deadline for reaching an agreement has already been postponed twice because some progress was being made, that situation cannot go on indefinitely, said Gordon. Ultimately, the commission, made up of well-respected people appointed by the ministry from all facets of the pork industry as well as consumers, can change the rules and regulations under which Ontario Pork operates. Or it can simply grant the request to go on with an auction. Moore said the Ontario Pork board was given only two days notice of the first hearing called by the commission on October 25 and then was surprised to learn that the auction was being revoked, not just postponed. He was also caught short when the status of hog contracts to U.S. processors was included in the hearing. "It was different than what we were prepared to discuss." Under the price formula system, U.S. processors can't bid on Ontario hogs but they are given access to them through contracts so one balances the other, suggested Moore adding, "There is no favouritism." Processors here have been hiding behind the countervail duty that must be paid to get live Ontario hogs across the border, said Moore. Referring again to McCain, Moore suggested he is trying to buy hogs here as cheaply as he can which is diametrically opposed to what the board is trying to accomplish with a return to an open auction. He disagrees with McCain's contention that he docs not have access to U.S. hogs because of pseudo -rabies. He suggested processors can purchase chilled carcasses from south of the border, similar to what Thome Apple Valley is already doing in Ontario. That is something McCain said he docs not want to do while his plants here are aheady operating far under capacity. With 90,000 hogs per week consumed in Ontario and only 78,000 per week offered for salt by Ontario producers, the demand for hogs is certainly present. Establishing a marketing system so both producers and processors here can profitably fill it remains that dilemma.0
