The Rural Voice, 1995-12, Page 291:: Alfa Laval Agri especially needed for a balanced diet. Normally, though, food banks have few regular donations and little control over what is donated so providing balance in the diet is difficult. The milk donations come in regularly, however, guaranteeing a continuing source of high-quality food. "The Ontario Association of Food Banks is deeply appreciative of the commitment from dairy farmers and it is our hope that donations of milk will increase as food banks work with local dairy farmer organizations in their own counties and communities," said Joanne Santucci, program co-ordinator with the association. Anderson says he has visited several foodbanks and has been impressed by how hard the volunteers who run them work. "I really have to respect them because they're working very hard to help people." While early response to the program is heart-warming, the need is huge. The Kitchener food bank, for instance, gets 500 litres per month as its share of program but the community's estimated monthly need is 9,000 litres. The same situation exists in most of the other centres. sere are 174 different communities in Ontario that have emergency feeding programs. Each month about 250,000 different individuals have been using food banks. With recent welfare cuts, the need is expected to rise. Urban food banks are expecting a 50 per cent increase in the demand for their service by January. Dairy Farmers of Ontario has set a 60,000 -litre per month limit for the first year for the program, a total of 720,000 litres per year, but that target is far from being met. If donations continue to fall short of the target, there will be an opportunity for those currently donating to increase their gifts or for more farmers to join the program starting in February. The board will evaluate many aspects of the project before the end of the first year to ensure it is running smoothly. Anderson, who donates 300 litres per month, says his donation puts to work his belief that milk is a vital part of the diet. He knows that 10 litres a day of his milk is improving the diet of someone who needs it.0 We've Moved!
