It is 80 years since the first Ontario 4-H club was
started in Waterloo County. Over the years, many
things have changed, some for the good, some
more controversial. As local 4-H clubs celebrate
the anniversary
we talked to
some of the
region's 4-H
leaders to find
outt their feelings
on where the
movement has
been, where it is
today, and what
the future will
bring.

THE MAGAZINE OF THE AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY
As the rural non-farm population continues to grow there will
be pressures on things such as the siting of intensive livestock
operations, Gordon Surgeoner and Wayne Caldwell told the
Poultry Producers Update conference in October. Surgeoner
said rural Ontario grows by about 40,000 people a year even
as the farm population is reduced. These are well-educated,
relatively rich individuals, aware of their rights, he said.
