Home Decorating
Post college home
BY PATTI ROBERTSON
Interestingly, last month's column
inspired consultation calls from no
less than three young couples.
These young professionals had
been out of university long enough to
have gotten married, started families,
bought homes and started business.
Two of the
couples bought
charming older
homes, while
the third chose
a pretty little
bungalow.
Their problem?
"How do we
get out of the
"college style"
syndrome in
our home while
paying off
mortgages and
student loans?"
Many people
arc in this
similar situation. The following is a
tour of our plan to achieve a well
designed and balanced atmosphere.
We started with a fact-finding
conversation to discover how and
where they'd entertain, traffic flow,
budget and possessions plus and
minus. We planned to concentrate on
the flow in areas of the home where
company would pass, this
encompasses the entrance(s), family,
living, dining and bathrooms, along
with the kitchen for a starting point.
Our first plan of attack will be to
work with the good features already
on hand and update those which are
pulling our scheme down.
In this case, the side entrance is
used the most. We're giving the
walls a fresh coat of an almond, off-
white colour. Over this we'll stencil
a quaint geranium ivy design ... the
leaves will be in tones of dual teal
green and the geraniums will be a
wineberry hue. The stencil will wind
and trail up, across and down door
and window trim. The inside
entrance door is also a teal green
shade and features a wreath in
geranium ivy. The present flooring is
old battleship linoleum which we
plan on painting with a durable floor

and porch epoxy in teal green.
From the entrance we open into a
spacious family room, very cut up
with numerous bookshelves and
mixed -matched pieces of furniture.
While we intend to work with the
sculpted green and brown coloured
carpeting, we'll paint the bookshelves
and maple paneling in our
almond/off-white, thereby opening up
and brightening this room. The tired
plaid sofa and chair are getting new
slipcovers, which are relatively
inexpensive.
We're adding an interesting
ceiling moulding in teal green along
with a country scene border to add
character. We're doubling -up on our
second -time -around semi -sheers to
provide better coverage over the patio
door and we'll top the sheers off with
a co -related slim -line valance and
matching toss cushions. A fresh coat
of accent paint will update our old
wooden table lamps and shades.
In the kitchen the client has
recently applied a bold wall covering,
and cotton flounce valances in
conjunction with painting the
cupboards and trim bright green.
We've agreed to repaint the trim a
subtle almond tint while working
with the wallcovering and valances.
The almond colour will add a more
professional touch. At present the
table and chairs are an outdoor PVC
set. We're going to drape the table
with a floor -length covering.
On to the monstrous dining room,
where Aunt May's 1930s style dining
table, chairs and buffet are in service,
along with four tall, unmatched
bookshelves, crammed full of
continually used resource books.
The wallcovering is of Edwardian
vintage grid design. (We need to see
less of this wallcovering!) The tired
white trim makes the paper look very
old. Our collective surgery will be to
repaint our trim in our almond colour,
thereby toning with the paper's hue
and lessening contrast. The
bookshelves will also be painted in
almond and arranged along one end
of our room. In front of the
bookcases we're positioning two
chairs and a lamp -topped table to
create a reading area at one end of
