The Rural Voice, 1995-09, Page 46impact on the decision of whether the
county will win the match. In Huron
there's been an embarrassment of
riches, McGavin says. So many
landowners came forward offering
land that it became difficult to choose
one. Some sites, such at the old Port
Albert airport site (where the 1946
Victory Plowing Match was held)
and the Grand Bend airport were
turned down because they didn't
have good enough access to traffic.
Still there are three sites in the
running: one north of Brussels, one
in McKillop Township and one at
Dashwood. OPA officials have said
any one of them would make a good
site, McGavin says, though each has
its drawbacks. Two of the sites are
located in black holes in cellular
telephone coverage so the phone
companies have to be encouraged to
erect towers in the area. Two of the
sites require three-phase power to be
brought in over a kilometre but the
move is to use generators on the site
anyway so that may not be a
problem. One of the sites would have
to have water trucked in while two
others could be serviced from nearby
villages.
Then there are the feelings of
people in the county to be
considered. People in the south
are lobbying for Dashwood because
in the three times Huron has hosted
the match, it has never been south of
Highway 8 (although twice it was
barely north of the highway). In the
long run, McGavin says, what may
tip the scales to the southern location
would be the proximity to London
and the accommodation available in
Bayfield and Grand Bend for show
visitors. "We want to keep every
dollar we can in the county," he says.
As much as possible the county
organization is heading the advice of
OPA in choosing the site. "We can
hardly make up our minds,"
McGavin says.
Once Huron is awarded the match,
the hard work begins, but other
counties like Bruce will agree that
the hard work is worth it.0
