IPM headquarters and the media
centre. The city, laid out with the
assistance of a computer designer,
expects to host 700 exhibitors.
Elsewhere on the 1,000 -acre site will
be crop show -cases, the historical
and antique shows, exhibits of new
technology, tours, an interactive
educational program, a lifestyles
program with food and craft shows, a
fully -staffed day-care centre and a
1,000 site trailer park. The event is
forecast to pump $5 million into the
local economy.
But the costs of staging such a
mammoth event in the 1990s
are also huge. Budget for the
1995 IPM is $1 million but that
doesn't include the hundreds of
thousands of volunteer hours. In
advance planning, 500 volunteers
organized into 35 committee have
been preparing for the show. During
the event a total of 1,000 volunteers
will be involved.
Executive Chairman for the
Waterloo committee is Reg
Cressman, former UCO vice-
president, now executive director of
the Kitchener Chamber of
Commerce. There's plenty of family
connection involved in the
committee. Reg's wife, Katherine, is
chairperson of the banquet
committee. She is daughter of R.G.
Brown, 11 -time Ontario champion
horse plowman, sister of Bob Brown,
once Canadian national champion,
and aunt of Carson Brown, twice the
junior national champion. Bob
Brown is chairperson of the tractor
park committee.
The Cressmans' daughter Sarah is
1995 North Dumfries Queen of the
Furrow. Their son Matthew is a
member of the teams and horses
committee while their daughter Amy
is secretary of the corporate
participation committee.
The two vice -chairpersons are Art
Gibney, a recently -retired executive
of Canada's largest food-processing
company, Maple Leaf Foods, and
John Edworthy who operates a dairy
and cash crop farm, in addition to a
seed corn dealership, near Ayr.
Treasurer is Doug Best from
Manulife Financial of Waterloo
while Susanne Gillow is the
secretary. Norm Perriman, a director
at the Ontario Plowmen's
Association, rounds out the
