In fact the McKinlays don't even
have a computer; they do have a fax
machine and this gives them access to
the services of the breed
organizations and the genetic
evaluation data of Beef Improvement
Ontario programs.
As if their lives weren't already
busy enough, James is active in many
farm organizations, a few of which
include the Grey County Soil and
Crop Improvement Association, the
Beef Improvement Association and
the Environmental Farm Plan Peer
Review Committee.
Currently, a major commitment is
being President of Beef Improvement
Ontario. This is the organization that
has been charged with delivering all

career schedule the couple are

government. "Ontario is second to
none in compiling statistics to
measure genetic characteristics of
beef animals," McKinlay states,
adding, "Our goal is to make Ontario
the source of superior beef genetics
for the world."
These two busy people still have
time for hobbies. On a cupboard in
their home there is a proud display —
under separate ownership, like the
beef herd — of toy farm machinery.
Tucked away in various outbuildings
are antique, restored Oliver tractors;
James is still looking for a few
original parts. He probably couldn't
resist the challenge if someone has
another decrepit machine parked
under a pile of bales.
Could they farm successfully
without their off -farm jobs? "Yes,"
said James. "We would have to do
