basis radioactive gases like Tritium,
Iodine 131 and Argon, Krypton and
Xenon are released. Liquid
radioactive wastes are collected in
storage tanks, sampled for radiation
levels, diluted if necessary to avoid
exceeding pollution limits, and
pumped directly into local bodies of
water on a daily basis.
Tritium, a carcinogen, has been
found in elevated levels in tap water
of towns near nuclear facilities like
BNPD. Tritium has a half-life of
12.3 years, which means that after
this timespan its radioactive effect on
the human body has decreased to 50
per cent, but continuous intake would
accumulate in the body cells and
increase the risk of contracting cancer
many -fold.
In the euphoria over the unlimited
source of cheap clean energy nobody
in the scientific field had ever
considered that the waste from the
generating process would have to be
dealt with, too! The spent fuel
coming out of a reactor is much more
hazardous with a higher level of
radiation than the original fuel!
Plutonium 239 has a half-life of
24,390 years, yes, years, Plutonium
242 has a half-life of 387,000 years,
practically an eternal source of
hazardous radiation!
Hundreds of millions of taxpayers'
dollars has been spent to find a way
to permanently deposit this waste
safely, but without avail. Many
generations after us will be burdened
by this tragedy!
Ontario Hydro Nuclear Division
has consistently withheld information
about emissions and the health -
damaging effects of radiation under
the guise that it is not exceeding
federal limits. It has never been
pointed out that these limits are only
for annual exposure and do not take
in account the long-term buildup in
environment and human body tissues.
So it's the same as biogenetic
engineering of plants and animals -
only the short-term gain is
considered. Once the GENIE is let
out of the bottle there is no way to get
it back in again!0
