create a job for an extra veterinarian
in the area. There will be 15 to 20
jobs caring for the livestock
operation and jobs for training
horses, transporting horses and other
services.
The group forecasts that 1,200
acres will be needed to grow the oats,
hay and straw needed, producing an
estimated $279,000 in income for
farmers in the area. "These people
have got an interest in good feed for
their investment and they're willing
to pay for it," says Beard. Even at
higher prices, the feed will still be
cheaper than they would have paid in
areas nearer large cities where people
can spend up to $500 a month to
board and feed a horse.
Bcard says the company has
hired a market research firm
to carefully study the
potential before getting this
far in its plans. Talking to
horse owners across southern
Ontario, he says, they found a lot of
interest in the concept they were

they aren't there. Some of the
residents would be part-time
recreational residents while others
would live there full time. Many
people have flex -time jobs which
means they can work country life
into their schedule, he says. Others
will take advantage of the emerging
information highway to work at
home and be connected to their office
by fax and computer modem.
Research shows the average family
will have two horses.
Which is one of the questions
raised at the meeting: where will all
the pasture come from? There could
be as many as 300 horses with only
250 acres of pasture. Generally it
takes two acres of pasture for each
horse.
The Stone Lea developers foresee
turning one problem into a solution
for another problem. The
development will have its own
sewage treatment plant and, rather
than discharge the effluent into the
river, they plan to install an
underground irrigation system to feed
the waste water into the root zone of
the pastures, increasing grass
production. The development will
