Any opinions expressed herein may not necessarily reflect the views of The Perth County Pork Producers Association. All pork producers in Perth County should attend the Annual Meeting, especially if a significant portion of your livelihood is obtained in this industry. This year the annual meeting is especially important for several reasons. 1) It is an election year. At this meeting producers will elect representative producers to carry on the work of PCPPA (Perth County Pork Producers' Association) and to represent producers at the OPPMB (Ontario Pork Producers' Marketing Board) level for the next two years. The producers you select will make important decisions helping to set the short and longer term direction of the pork industry in this county and province. Generally this political structure speaks on behalf of producers not only in the area of hog and pork marketing, but also in every other area that directly affects pork producers. I would encourage producers with interest, energy and enthusiasm to run for office. If no one taps you on the shoulder, let one of the current directors know of your interest and we would be glad to nominate you. From experience, I can say the involvement is worthwhile and informative. Please consider it. PCPPA meets approximately monthly. 2) This year an updated political structure is being implemented. Some of the changes include moving the term for councillors from three years to two, the reduction in the number of councillors from Perth County from about 35 to 25. I believe we will be electing one from each township and the rest as councillors at large. This year each farm entity is allowed two votes instead of one. You have already received a form to fill out from the OPPMB which indicates who your additional voter will be. 3) As I write this report (Dec. 15, 1994), major changes are happening at the OPPMB level. County annual meetings give producers the opportunity to receive accurate information (rather than from media reports or gossip) about these events, usually directly from the staff or from our county OPPMB director. It gives producers the opportunity to ask questions and give suggestions. 4) Producers have the opportunity to make suggestions. By making these in the form of a resolution which is debated and acted upon at the meeting, it helps measure producers' wishes and ultimately get direction for decision-making. We are encour- aging producers to call a member of the resolution committee prior to the meeting. They can help draft a reso- lution and prepare it for the annual meeting. The hope is that more back- ground information can be provided and perhaps more consideration can be given to the idea prior to voting. The 1995 resolutions committee consists of: Mark Yungblut, 229- 6374; Larry Skinner, 291-4870; Vince Hulshof, 393-5586; and Clare Schlegel, 655-2750. 5) Perth County Pork Producers Association gives full reports about some of its activities. It is an active enthusiastic group, sponsoring activities from the annual golf tournament to the work of the promotions officer, from the sale of pork products by the BBQ committee to advising and lobbying the local MP and MPP, from the presentation of the pork producer of the year award to the financial well being of the organization. 6) It is an excellent opportunity to meet with other producers and stakeholders in our industry. Cross table conversation sometimes leads to significant ideas and always to the building of camaraderie among people in our industry. 7) Lastly, come and hear our guest speaker, Dr. Larry Martin, always in top form with a lively provocative presentation.0 by Clare Schlegel PhonelFax 519-655-2750 ANNOUNCEMENT: PCPPA & HCPPA ANNUAL CURLING BONSPIEL Exeter Curling Club February 4, 1995 $60 per rink Contact Mike Zurbrigg, 284-2079 JANUARY 1995 37
