The Rural Voice, 1994-12, Page 19Grain Markets
seems to be pulling out of a recession,
the U.S. dollar is weak and trade walls
have been dismantled to some extent in
the world. China is committed to feed-
ing its people and controlling inflation
and as a result are buying grain and oils
worldwide. The U.S. has record live-
stock numbers and although unprofit-
able, these animals will be fed com and
soymeal instead of feed wheat.
I feel a certain degree of optimism
about grain prices, but I have a fear that
there may be some very sharp valleys
in the coming year. If supply and
demand are not more or less matched,
there will be some sharp price
fluctuations, more so if a great deal of
selling takes place at the "wrong" time
than if there is a lack of selling.
I think it would be prudent for
producers to forward contract some of
their 1994 production profitably and
take a very hard look at some new crop
sales. No one ever went broke taking a
profit and we all know that when
farming is profitable, the whole
community benefits.0
