weaned. Growing Iambs require
higher levels of crude protein and
energy than the dry ewe flock,
therefore the producer should ensure
that the lambs are grazed on the
fields with the best grass or the lambs
could be forward grazed. Forward
grazing means putting the Iambs into
a fresh field for two to three days to
graze the leafier, higher quality
material and then moving them to a
new field of grass and the ewe flock
is grazed behind the Iambs to
consume the forage that is lower in
quality. This type of grazing
management does a better job of
matching the requirements of both
dry ewes and growing lambs to the
available forage. If the rainfall is low
and the pasture quality is poor, the
producer may decide to take some or
all of the lambs off pasture and finish
them in drylot or sell as feeder lambs
and leave the mature flock on grass.0

Getting help with
farm finances
If your farm business is having
difficulty making ends meet, or is not
as profitable as you think it could be,
many complex decisions must be
made. If you feel that your financial
situation is a concern, the Ministry of
Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs
offers a number of confidential
services to assist you. While there are
no magic solutions or quick fixes, the
most important step is to take some
action before you are no longer in a
position to make a change.
Financial and production
management information is available
from Ministry extension staff. A farm
analysis report can be prepared to
identify the strengths and weaknesses
of the business. The Family Farm
Advisor Progrm provides peer
counselling, a form of farmers
helping farmers
The professional Services
Assistance Program is available to
hire consultants, accountants, lawyers
and health professionals to help you
work through a difficult financial
situation.
