production, but I don't have good
proof. I suspect that the sclerotia will
live fewer years in no -till where they
stay on the soil surface. If you
moldboard plow an infected field this
fall, the sclerotia arc probably too
deep to send up spores next year; but
the next plowing will bring them
back up again.
Because of all these variables, be
very careful rating variety resistance
where you arc comparing varieties on
different fields. The only reliable
comparison is on the same field
which has had the same management
for the last four years.
A final suggestion – I would be
checking my soybean fields and
rating them this fall for mold, as
either none or very low, or quite
noticeably infected. You need this
information as you plan rotations
over the next four years. With the
great increase in soybcan acreage
here, and more frequent growing of
this crop on a given field, we will
have to pay more attention to the
white mold problem.°

Weaning Iambs from
spring lambing
Weaning time for Iambs born in
the spring of the year will be
determined by the average birthdate
of the lambs, the availability of
pasture and the milking ability of the
flock. There is very little need for
ewes that lamb annually in the spring
to have their lambs weaned at a
young age or less than 60 days.
In most spring lambing flocks the
lambs will be about 90-120 days of
age before they are weaned. These
ewes will not be exposed to the rams
until November or December,
therefore there is time for a longer
lactation and Fiore time for the flock
to obtain the desirable BCS after
weaning. Weaning time in most
cases is determined by the
availability of good pasture. If the
pastures are lush and there is lots of
it, there is no need to wean lambs.
However, if pastures get short and
lambs have to compete with the ewes
for grass, then the Iambs should be
