NOM 2T0 (519) 236-7345 30 THE RURAL VOICE Ratite Convention offers introduction to growing farming alternative — ostrich, emu, rhea More farmers looking for a way to make more money have been turning to ostriches, emu and rheas. The annual convention of the Ontario Ratite Association in Waterloo in October will be chance for newcomers to the industry and veterans alike to hear some of the top experts in North America talk about opportunities in the industry. Speakers include Al and Pat Jodoin of Texas, among the leaders and most enthusiastic promoters of the industry in North America (Texas is the leader in ratite production). Zoanne Parker, exotic poultry specialist at Pennsylvania State University will speak on incubation of the valuable emu, ostrich and rhea eggs. Marion Cunningham will speak on rhea management. Also speaking will be Mark Potter, a chemist from Texas who will talk about end uses for emu oil which is known for its superior quality in helping heal sore joints and is used by many trainers for major league sports teams and by physio -therapists. There will also be a chance to sample emu meat. The industry is moving into a new phase where end products, not just breeding stock production, will become increasingly more important. The association is looking into forming a co-operative to handle marketing of the meat, oil and leather produced by the big birds. An abattoir in Exeter has recently begun processing a few birds. A restaurant in London now features rhea meat on the menu. A tanning factory is now handling skins which make fine quality, very soft, leather. The association is hoping to soon have some garments made of the leather for a fashion show. Anyone interested in learning more can attend the convention October 28-30.
