EIk meat production in Ontario is
currently low due to the small
numbers of animals in the province
and resulting breeding stock prices.
As Ontario's elk population
increases, so will the production of
and demand for elk meat.
Breeding stock continues to be
in demand as more and more
people recognize the benefits of elk
farming, both domestically and in
the U.S. As new farmers diversify
into this thriving field of agriculture,
and as current elk farmers seek to
expand and improve their herds,
there is a healthy and active market
for elk breeding stock.
EIk truly are the livestock of the
future and an increasing number of
Ontarians are realizing this and be-
coming a part of this growing indus-
try. Whether as full scale elk farm,
a supplementary branch to diversify
a current operation, or as a hobby
farm, the benefits of elk farming are
manifold and accessible.
With only about 20 elk farms in
Ontario compared to over 200 each
in Alberta and Saskatchewan, the
timing is ripe for getting in at the
ground floor and experiencing the
full benefits of the industry's
expansion. EIk farming has not
begun to realize its full potential, but
it is well on its way.
