36 THE RURAL VOICE
North for a trip to the harbour. There
the fishing boats lined up along the
shore brought a reminder of the
importance of fishing as well as
farming to the local economy.
Back on Highway 21 and heading
south we stopped at the Southampton
Market where there truly must be
something for everyone. Located in an
old furniture factory on the east side
of Highway 21 near the southern end
of the town the market offers a little
bit of everything, from kitchenwares
and hardware to crafts and artwork.
There's even a restaurant, The Cook
and Carver. For those who like
woodworking there's an adventure
awaiting upstairs where you can buy
unfinished portions of furniture are
remarkable prices (we saw turned bed
posts at S5 each in either maple, ash
or pine) from which you can assemble
your own furniture.
Tearing ourselves away because
the day was getting late, we headed
south again to the bustling town of
Port Elgj n. Between shopping and
exploring you could probably spend
most of the day here too but we had to
zip through because we'd started so
late (if you want an unhurried
opportunity to see so many interesting
places along the way you may want to
get an early start).
South of Port Elgin we turned east
at North Bruce on Bruce County Road
11, heading toward Paisley. There's
more history to explore here if you
wish at the Treasure Chest Museum
(see our Daytripping article of July
1993 for details). Paisley is a pretty
village where several tributaries join
the Saugeen River.
County Road 11 will take you back
to just north of Chesley where our
adventure all began. You're back in
the present, but with a better
understanding of the past.0
