• Elk arc also known as wapiti
which is Shawnee for "white
rump".
• Prices at a recent
Saskatchewan sale ranged
from $5,000 - $8,700 for a
'92 female, $3,400 - $5,200
fora '93 female, $1,500 -
$6,000 for '92 malts, and
$800 - $2,700 for '93 males.
• Average annual velvet
production is 16 pounds.
• A top producing male
produces 30 pounds of velvet.
• One pound of velvet is worth
approximately $65.
• Velvet harvest lasts from
May to August.
• Calving is in June and July.
• Rut (breeding season) is from
September to November.
• Elk require 1-1.5 kg grain,
and 4 -7 kg hay/day in
winter.
• If hay is of superior quality,
the quantity of grain can be
reduced.
• Three elk can be pastured in
the same space it takes to
feed one beef cow.
• Fencing and handling
facilities cost approximately
$3/foot to have contracted
out, less if you do your own
work.
