The more elaborate decks of today
are a larger task for a do-it-yourselfer
but Dwight says many people are
still able to build them themselves.
First you have to look at the
restrictions you face, he says.
Where can the deck be added
to the house to best effect? Do you
want sun or shade? How many levels
do you need?
There are good books of deck
plans available at most building
centres, he says. If one doesn't fit
exactly to your needs you may be
able to adapt one.
One of the biggest concerns in
getting started is getting good
footings in the ground deep enough
to be below the frost line, so there
won't be any heaving. This past
winter was a good test of how good a
job people have done installing their
footings, he says.
You also need to decide what type
of wood you will use in your deck.
Pressure treated lumber was
universally used on decks for several
years but there is concern about its
safety today (it's treated with
arsenic) and is a devil for giving off
slivers.
Cedar is about 20 per cent more
expensive but is much nicer to work
with and makes a much nicer deck,
Dwight says.
Once you start building you must
