UP3 Porcofram offers
best of two worlds
The best of Canadian and
European bloodlines are
blended in the breeding stock
Kees and Joanne Monden
produce at their R.R.5 Mitchell
farm, Canadian base for UPB
Porcofram.
When the Mondens decided to
totally refurbish their operation
back in 1990, they cleared their
commercial herd of 90 sows and,
after barn renovations, brought in
70 high health Landrace sows
from Bodmin Ltd. at Brussels.
Then a former neighbour of
Kees' before he left Holland for
Canada 34 years ago, came to
visit. Now a director of UPB
Nederland, the neighbour
suggested the Mondens should
consider linking up with UPB. After
three years of discussions, the
Mondens began importing semen
from the UPB Porcofram
bloodlines in the United Kingdom
and Holland. Last year, semen
was imported from Master -
breeders Al in the UK from two of
the top Al boars standing in their
stud, one a Landrace boar and
one a Large White. More semen
will be imported from Europe.
The Mondens have breeding
stock of their own that is making a
mark in the industry. Their
Landrace boar numbered 5606C
was tested at the New Hamburg
Boar Test Station last year and
had the highest average daily gain
of the year at the station: 1.24
kilos. It also had the highest index
of the year: 151. The boar was
sold to the Al centre in Woodstock.
The Mondens sell purebred
Landrace boars to other
breeders and Landrace x
Large White gilts to commercial
pig units. Kees has begun to sell
bred gilts, which are served at a
minimum of 120 kg Iiveweight, in
addition to open gilts.
The Mondens do DNA testing
through the University of Guelph
to check for the presence of the
halothane gene.
Their "Excellent" health
classification is monitored by
OMAFRA and by their own
