land for hay production means the
mid-sized farmer has become a
smaller player in the machinery
market in southern Bruce, says
Whytock. When you can rent land at
$80 an acre while you're working off
the farm it's tempting not to farm.
Still, there are plenty of farmers
around who are still keeping the farm
going while working off the farm.
Benninger says the middle is still
holding in his area. People will tell
you things aren't that good but
they're hanging in there, he says.
Many realize they have to get bigger
and they're buying one size larger in
their equipment than they have
usually bought.
For Holliday, the large number of
Mennonite farmers in the Mount
Forest arca has meant the mid-sized
farm is still a strong part of the local
economy.
The small equipment market
isn't necessarily just an
urbanite who's looking for a
glorified lawn tractor. Some
watchers of the agricultural scene see
an alternative to the large farm being
the smaller "estate" farm where food
produced has a close identity with
the farm and the people who produce
it, something similar to the estate
wineries that have been springing up
in Ontario and make up a large part
"Estate farms" could
add to the demand for
small equipment
of the wine business in France. These
are farms that market directly to the
public and do less business but boast
higher profits. Such farms will
supply a growing demand for such
things as organic food.
"As consumers are demanding
more organically grown products and
a diverse range of fruits and
vegetables, the small farmer will
benefit," said Pat Carroll, national
manager of advertising and public
relations for Kubota Tractor's U.S.
operation in the Agri Marketing
