Highlights of 50 years of activities of Perth Federation of Agriculture
- organized Federation of Agriculture
in every township;
- associated with Farm Forums;
- disapproved of Daylight Saving
Time;
- sent representatives to Beef Feeder
and Hog Breeder meetings;
- active sponsor of films for
elementary schools and general public;
- 1945 annual meeting guest speaker
stated "30 per cent of population is on
farms," "objective of Federation is to
educate as well as unite";
- 1946 membership of PFA nearly
2,000;
- April 1947 start of Co-operative
Health Plan;
- urge lift of embargo on beef cattle
to U.S.;
- 1948 canvassed for Canadian
Appeal for Children's fund - raised
$14,420.12;
- October 1950 - formed a Women's
Committee;
- involved with hydro line through
Hibbert township;
- January 1950 - 1,200 attended a
"farm price protest" in Mitchell;
- January 1951 - Rev. A. H. (Bert)
Daynard was hired as a part-time
fieldman;
- annual meeting 1952 resolutions -
"support sugar beet industry and
restrict imported refined cane sugar",
"prohibit manufacture and sale of
synthetic dairy products", "to find ways
of distributing Canadian surplus food to
undernourished nations";
- October 1953 - passed a resolution
opposing farm tax for education;
- through the years, promoted: heel
fly eradication, soil testing, warble fly
control, rural credit unions, county
health unit, ARDA crop insurance,
blood donor clinics, water resource
management, brucellosis campaign,
leadership workshops;
- associated with Beef, Poultry,
Cream, Cheese, Milk, Egg, Wheat,
Corn, Pork, Dairy, White Bean
producers, FAME, Women's Institutes,
Junior Farmers;
- canvassed for tornado victims in
1953 and 1979;
- on several occasions, discussed
education problems in schools;
- took action on pipeline
agreements,and highway widening
compensation, hydro line lagoon and
pollution problems;
- 1963 - set up an office in Mitchell
with Ed Dearing as secretary -treasurer;
- participate in Ag Week program
and exhibits;
- meet annually with MP and MLA;
- exhibits and floats at Fall Fairs and
Plowing Match;
- sponsored a bookkeeping service;
- had a Centennial float in 1967;
- promoted one General Farm
Organization;
- participated in protest marches to
Ottawa and Toronto;
- met with township and county

- July 1985 - attended Rally at
Queen's Park;
- 1985 - held information meeting on
Spills Bill legislation;
- 1986 - held a farm tour car rally
through Perth County stopping at four
farm operations;
- presented brief to Crop Insurance
Hearings;
- 1988 - held Free Trade debate;
- 1988 - Agricultural Colouring Book
highlighting Perth County Agriculture
was handed out at International
Plowing Match in Stratford;
- 1989 - held a seminar titled "A
Positive Approach to Agriculture in the
90s";
- February 1992 - 40,000 farmers
rally in Ottawa, 400 from Perth County;
- 1992 - handed out "Compare the
Share" pamphlets at grocery stores and
shopping centres in the county;
- 1993 - held meeting on Crop
Insurance to voice concerns on yield
calculations for high moisture stored
corn; - held soil seminar with Perth Soil
& Crop; - became member of Stratford
& District Chamber of Commerce; -
promoted Environmental Farm Plans.0
