and rhubarb. The fourth quarter of
the moon should be used for the
same crops as in the third quarter
but this is a better time to kill pests
and pull weeds.
I went and retrieved my calendar
off the fridge after I did this research
and plotted out my schedule for
planting the vegetable garden this
spring. For those gardeners who
like to get a head start and have their
lettuce and peas in before you know
the snow has gone, the first quarter
is from April 11 to 19, best time for

lettuce and leafy crops. The second
quarter, April 19 to 25, marks the
best time to plant those luscious
snow peas.
For those of us who like to see
the ground warm up just a wee bit
more, the next set of planting dates
are as follows. The first quarter
falls from May 10 to May 18 which
will also be perfect for the lettuce,
cauliflower and broccoli. The
second quarter extends from May 19
to the full moon on May 25. During
this second quarter you can plant
peas, beans, and set out tomatoes.
Don't forget the rule of thumb about
the last frost date being May 24.
You may have to keep an eye on the
tender tomatoes and melons and
cucumbers and cover them or use
water cloches.
Then there are those who set a
day aside on the long weekend in
May and plant the whole garden in
one fell swoop and that is a plan too.
Happy digging.0
