Home Decorating
It's a new year, time to take stock
BY KENDRA KRAUTER
With the new year comes time to
take stock; whether it be at work, of
yourself or at home. The outcome of
all these we
hope will make
things better and
easier to work
and live with. If
one of the things
you are going to
change is some
of your
surroundings
maybe you
would like to
know what's hot
for '94!
What are the
designing trends
for 1994? Well,
it seems that neutral colours are back.
They have been coming for a few
years, whether we like it or not.
Most of us in Mid -Western Ontario
are still trying to dig out from under
the last wave of earth -tones and
neutrals that hit ... we are slow to
change. We seem to be too
economical and practical to make the
changes as they happen ... we wait
and are cautious about a new colour.
A lot of us are just getting ready to
change to dusty rose and now
neutrals are back. It is too bad that
money plays such an important part
in our lives. Just think of the fun we
could have if the bank account never
ran out of funds! Alas ... back to
reality! Most of us have had to cut
back or pare down our expenses for
economic reasons and from this a
style has evolved into a way of living
that is likely to be around for many
years. With the environmental
concerns that we face as well today,
the colour schemes are being copied
from nature's own, to give us the
feeling of warmth and comfort. The
upholstered furniture seems to be
oversized for comfort with classic
lines for a look that will not date
itself as quickly as furnishings from
the '80s. Again the colours are
neutrals. I have always been an
advocate of neutrals ... flooring and
furnishings especially because with a
few strokes of the paint brush, a few
rolls of wallpaper and an armload of
accent cushions you can completely
change the look of a room without
the expense of the big items. But
neutrals are not necessarily ideal
colours for kids, and rooms that will
take a lot of living, unless they are a
darker neutral mix.
The news for the floor is a natural
colour as well. The sisal floor cover-
ings with different textures and
weaves as well as tones are making a
comeback. These are very popular
now as are all low pile carpets. They
are very practical and easy to live
with. The flooring companies have
taken the challenge to the sisal floor
by offering the consumer the option
of synthetics or wool, in many
different styles and designs, berbers,
cut -and -loop, textured loop, level
loop as well as needlepoint carpet. If
you are installing a new neutral car-
pet in a room that is going to get a lot
of traffic, consider an area rug. There
are so many to choose from .. dhurrie,
kilim, Aubusson and Axminsters, to
name a few. They are one of the lux-
uries of decorating with their wonder-
ful colours and patterns that will add
that luxurious look to your room.
The walls will be neutral too,
whether they are painted or
wallpapered. Again colours and
textures come from nature, and could
be a subtle wallcovering or a stripe.
The colour will tend to be added by
the accessories. A steady life of
neutrals will leave you wanting and
the accents of colour will spice up
your life. One of the latest
collectibles now are Spheres, all sizes
and materials. This again is in
keeping with nature and the world
around us. The sun and the moon are
sharing the comeback in decorating
scenario. I should know as my
daughter is decorating her apartment
with the cosmic theme. Dishes,
candle holders, oven mitts, aprons,
wallpaper border and fabric. It is
actually quite smart and I did get
caught up in the fever with her. I
saved a few dollars by making her a
number of items using some
interesting fabric in the same theme.
