The Rural Voice, 1993-12, Page 46the market is the appearance of grain
stoves - stoves that use corn, wheat,
or rye instead of wood or wood •
pellets for their fuel. This
trend started about 10 years
ago on the west coast, and
has been steadily moving
cast.
Stoves that heat using
grain or wood pellets have
a more complicated design
and more parts than basic
wood stoves. Automatic
screw augers Toad the fuel,
combustion fans draw air
in, heat exchanger tubes
extract maximum heat
from combustion, exhaust
fans draw by-products out,
and electronic controls
regulate the operation.
Usually, the fuel is stored
in a hopper within the
stove, and the appliance
regulates the fuel flow to
the fire. Some designs
allow a burn for up to three
days without reloading,
and some arc designed to
be used as fireplace inserts. These
stoves eliminate the (to some)
onerous chore of cutting and hauling
wood, and proponents often like the
fact that no trees are cut down to
provide their heat.
Residential wood
pellet stoves were
developed in 1983 in
Seattle, Washington.
Sawdust and wood chips
from lumber mills are
compressed into pellets,
then sold directly to the
consumer in 40 pound bags.
They are convenient and
make good use of what
would have otherwise been
waste.
Users of wood stoves
tend to be ecologically
aware, as well. Marshall
Byle says, "Any family that
burns wood should plant a
couple of seedlings every
year." He also foresees
increased government
regulation on emission
controls, tree cutting, and
woodlot management
enforcement; thus, further
refinements and
Gas stoves can today give the same appearance as wood stoves,
with out the "inconvenience" of wood.
