Skyhawks
parachute team
drops in on
Bruce IPM
In a down-to-earth event like the
International Plowing Match, one of
the major attractions will be dropping
from the sky.
The Sky Hawks, the precision
parachute team of the Canadian
Forces will be performing at the
Match on opening day, Tuesday,
September 22, Wednesday,
September 23 and Thursday,
September 24. The first two days the
shows are planned for 3 p.m. and the
Thursday show will be at 11 a.m.
The 15 jumpers of the team
usually drop from an aircraft at
10,500 feet above ground level.
Trailing smoke canisters during their
descent, the jumpers activate their
main parachutes at about 3,000 feet
above the ground and thrill spectators
with their daring canopy formations
on their way to landing at the
designated target.
The Sky Hawks date back to 1969
when an unofficial team comprised
of sport parachute qualified members
of the Canadian Airborne Regiment
was formed under the authority of the
Commanding Officer. The Team
performed its first show on June 14,
1969 at the Mobile Force Fire Power
Demonstration at Canadian Forces
Base Petawawa, Ontario. At that time
the Team was known only as the
Canadian Airborne Regiment
Parachute Team.
In October of 1970 the team came
under the Commanding Officer of the
Canadian Airborne Centre and was
then officially authorized by National
Defence Headquarters in August of
the same year. The following month,
the name "Sky Hawks" was given to
the team.
In 1977 the Team traded the Para -
Commander round parachute for the
more manoeuvrable Ram -Air square
parachute. This advance in Team
equipment allowed for more dynamic
and crowd -pleasing performances.0
