The Rural Voice, 1993-09, Page 52Bruce's lakes, rivers provide fishing opportunities Surrounded by Lake Huron on one sidc and Georgian Bay to the north and cast and with major rivers Iikc the Saugccn and Saublc running through, Bruce County is a mecca for fishcrmcn. Walkerton, site of this year's International Plowing Match, is in the heart of Saugccn country. Come fall, the Saugccn River is filled with fishcrmcn seeking rainbow and salmon, but it is a popular fishing spot year round. Brook, brown and rainbow trout, small and large mouth bass, pike and muskic and coho and chinook salmon all offer challenge for even the most experienced fisherman. Lon Falkingham writing in Trout Canada magazine says the largely native fish population is smart, especially the older, larger veterans and test the fisherman's patience and skills. The Saugccn is a great challenge to fly rod fishermen since it has 22 species of mayfly, 22 of caddis and 11 of stonefly keeping fishcrmcn on their toes to constantly monitor conditions. Falkingham says the 2.8 kilometers below the Truax Dam, right in Walkerton, can take a whole day to fish properly. Over on Lake Huron the rewards can be even larger than the fish caught with fishing derbies along the shoreline. EDITION trout and walleye. Proceeds from the derby go to support the operation of Kincardine's brown trout hatchery, a part of the fish enhancement and conservation programs to replenish stocks in Lake Huron. In July competitive fishermen are involved in the Chantry Chinook Classic, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary. The event is hosted by the Lake Huron Fishing Club, a group of avid conservationists who have been raising salmon and stocking streams from a hatchery in Port Elgin for several years. The top salmon can win a boat, motor, trailer and fishing gear worth $20,000 for a registered fisherman who catches his prize-winner between Point Clarke in the south and Oliphant on the Bruce Peninsula. There are also prizes for the top trout caught. Of course every veteran fisherman has his or her own secret spot on one or another or of the dozens of streams that flow through the Bruce County hills. That information they're keeping to themselves.0 GRAIN STOVES INC.
