Bruce County is well-
known as bccf country -
with good reason.
According to statistics
from the June 4, 1991
census, Bruce ranked first
among Ontario counties in
cauls population (178,133),
first for slaughter cattle
(79,783) and first for calves
(40,096). It ranked second
for bccf cows (27,309) and
second for bccf breeding
heifers (5,363). Six per cent
of bccf cows in the province
arc in Bruce County.
With its high population
of beef cattle it's only natural that
Bruce would rank first in the
province with total pasture with
169,721 acres. It's also second in hay
(143,483 acres) and fourth in fodder
corn (18,924 acres).
Beef sales bring 5132 million to
the Bruce farm economy, with 14(X)
farms, more than half the total farms
in the county, raising at least some
bccf.

value of farm sales is $253,480,000,
putting it in 12th position in the
province in total farm sales.
Bruce ranks third in sheep and
lamb population with a total of 140
producers owning 11,000 sheep. This
generates $1 million in sales. In
addition 29,482 kilograms of wool
are sold with $55,000 in returns.

milk into butter and dried
skim milk, and Pine River
Cheese and Butter Co-
operative's cheese plant at
Pine River.
Bruce has 512 pork
producers marketing
150,000 hogs a year. It
ranks ninth in pig
population in the province.
Pork is the third largest
contributor to the farm economy.
Bruce is tied for 12th in poultry
population with 13 egg producers
selling $2.25 million dollars worth of
eggs and 29 broiler producers
earning $8 million.
In crops, the county ranks second
in barley production, fourth in mixed
grain, sixth in oats, 12th in winter
wheat, 13th in soybeans and 14th in
grain corn. It all adds up to incredible
variety in agriculture.0
