home for the aged in Walkerton.
When she retired from her nurse's
aide position at the home after 12
years of service, she stayed on as a
volunteer.
Walking into her house, it's easy
to see she doesn't relax when she's at
home. Painting supplies, baked
goods and bolts of cloth testify to the
fact that her nimble fingers keep
busy. With her self-effacing ways
and willingness to work, Nellie is, in
fact, typical of the type of person
involved with something like the
plowing match. She comes from a
breed of rural families that, although
they may not stand out in a crowd,
make up the backbone of rural coun-
ties with their commitment to family
and neighbours and are remembered
and revered, despite the apparent
normalcy of their lives. People like
Nellie and her family get things done,
whether it be feeding the cows in the
relative privacy of their farms or
hosting an International Plowing
Match, an event which annually
draws thousands of people to a
normally quiet corner in the country.
When it's over, most people will
forget about the commitment and
volunteerism that saw this year's
match come to fruition — they'll
forget about the generosity of people
like the Johnstons who helped make
the event a reality. And Nellie won't
remind them. Just every once in a
while, she'll dig out the photo albums
and tell people with an abashed grin,
"I was the Mayor of Tented City in
1993, I didn't really want to be, but I
guess it was exciting."0
