The Rural Voice, 1993-09, Page 15County's Kinsmen clubs will act as
security guards, safeguarding the
site's perimeters. Roe and Young are
also responsible for organizing fire
protection. Daily, four to six firemen
will roam the site and a pumper and
tanker will be on standby. Other
Tented City Committee tasks include
lawn cutting, installing post holes,
selling wood shavings, fork-lift
services, sign painting and sign
installation.
Painting and repairing the signs
alone involves 10 to 15 people, so
how many volunteers are there
involved in the Tented City
committee? Roe doesn't have an
exact figure but the number runs into
the hundreds, he says. "The level of
involvement is really amazing.
Everybody wants to have something
to do with the match." The
enthusiasm seems to have caught the
co-chairs off -guard. Roe recalls
during the summer when volunteers
"Everybody wants to
have something to do
with the Match."
were calling him, eager to get started,
but he didn't have anything for them
to do! The amount of enthusiasm
naturally leads to a camaraderie
among the workers which Young has
found especially rewarding. "I like
the fellowship," he states simply.
It's been a busy year for Roe and
the volunteers. By the time it's over,
both Roe and Young will have spent
all their vacation time working at the
site, leaving their businesses in the
hands of family members and friends.
Each had planned to take three weeks
off in September, not to rest, but to
permanently man a special office on
the plowing match grounds to handle
any needs or problems that arise prior
to and during the match. Then, on
September 26, the day after the
match, they'll finally get a much
deserved break, bittersweet though it
may be, as they watch all their
planning, labour and efforts being
quickly dismantled as volunteers
from Renfrew, next year's host
county, begin the process all over
again.0
