The Rural Voice, 1993-08, Page 37off as soon as they appear over
several years, the plant will
eventually die. To quickly kill the
Japanese knotweed, soil sterilant
herbicides can be used; however,
applying this compound will also kill
flowers, grasses, shrubs and trees
and leave the soil sterile for two or
three years. A careful application of
ammonium sulfamate can accom-
plish the task of killing the
knotweed, yet confine soil
sterilization to a small area. When
the leaves are out, dip the stems into
the herbicide in a can or bottle with a
large opcning. This will ensure only
the knotweed plant is treated. An
alternate method involves cutting the
stem a few inches above the ground
just below a node, and pouring the
herbicide into the stem's hollow
using a squeeze -cap, detergent
bottle, or a squirt can. It would be
wise to contact the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture before using any
chemical herbicide.
How the Japanese fleece -flower
is seen, weed or privacy screen, will
depend on the plant's location on the
property and the owner's
perspective. For me, this perennial
plant forms a wonderful privacy
screen from our neighbours. As
long as the plant stays on their
property.0
Knorweed foliage is 2-10 cm wide.
