father's windmill in Holland. To get
to the windmill, go back to Highway
4, turn left and go one block past the
railway tracks to Maria St. and turn
left. This will take you to King St.
leading to Bayfield Road, which
becomes Huron County Road 13
outside of town.
Travel nine km toward Bayfield
then watch for a small white sign
pointing down a road to your left (if
you miss it don't worry because you
can take the next left as well, a fact
pointed out by a large red field sign
advertising the windmill). Turn left
and travel to the first corner where a
sign will direct you to the mill.
You'll go up the lane of Scott and
Kathy Adkin (Kathy is Mr. DeJong's
daughter who now looks after the
mill).
You may catch a peek of the huge
landmark as you drive along, its sails
turning majestically. Beginning in
1980 Frank DeJong built a replica of
a Dutch windmill. The resulting
fully -working windmill soars 95 feet
1000 bags of cement
needed for foundation
of huge windmill
in the air with 74 -foot sails to catch
the winds off Lake Huron. It took
1000 bags of cement just for the
foundation. The wood was from
DeJong's own woodlot. Since many
of the parts required couldn't be
bought in Canada, he used his
ingenuity to make them himself. The
mill was finally finished in June,
1989 when a 12 -ton cap, and finally
the huge sails, were put in place.
This is a working windmill, capable
of sawing 45 -foot logs.
The windmill is open daily in the
summer from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
Sundays from 1-5. The admission
charge is $3.50 per person.
After you've finished your tour you
can travel just five km to historic
Bayfield with its harbour, beach and
dozens of charming shops. Turn left
as you leave the Adkin lane and
follow the winding concession until
you get to the Old Homestead
campground. Take the paved road to
your right just past the campground.
