Another from his uncle didn't fare as
well. It is missing the Queen Victoria
plates he remembers polishing as a
youngster.
Explaining how he built his
collection Batty says one thing just
"kind of led to another".
"You never know what will
happen," he says, prefacing a story
about an acquisition made three years
ago. Driving in West Wawanosh
Township, near Dungannon, Batty
spied an old ramshackle log cabin,
built in 1855 by Henry Jones.
Inspired by the rustic dwelling, Batty
approached the property owner about
purchasing it, then moved and rebuilt
it in front of his harness shop. It's
inside here that the voices of the past
really come to life. Echoes of the four
Jones children's voices can almost be
heard in the tiny home amidst the oil
lanterns and wooden furnishings. The
old bathtub hangs on the wall next to
the baby buggy, which Batty
discovered has a false bottom in it for
whisky running.
The legs of the old footstool are
made from deer feet and the chamber
pot sits next to the wooden bed.
On the wall hangs a cheque issued
from the Commercial Bank of
Canada in 1862, while below it is a
summons from 1869 for the
repayment of $5.
Century Agriculture Centre
Homestead has become a favourite
tour for school children, clubs and
organizations in the fall and winter,
but Mrs. Batty says once spring
arrives things really pick up. "In the
past three years, we have filled seven
guest books," she said. There is no
admission charge and while
appointments aren't necessary, Batty
says it is a good idea to call ahead.
Allow yourself plenty of time for
the experience. As Betty Batty says,
"You can't begin to see it all in a
couple of hours."
On Highway 4 at the south end of
Clinton (turn right on Victoria
Terrace, the last street before the
Bayfield River — a blue "historical
Site" sign points the way) is a tribute
to another family's dedicated work
over a long period of time. The CNR
School -on -Wheels, situated in
Sloman Memorial Park, celebrates
the efforts of Clinton natives Fred
and Cela Sloman to bring education
to isolated communities in Northern
