30 THE RURAL VOICE
Bob Budd waters seedlings before
planting out in early June.
the corn sprayed. "People don't have
a heart attack if they don't think
you're trying to slide one by them."
If he had been selling the same corn
at a farmers' market, however, he
could imagine having irate customers
the next week.
There are still plenty of "bugs" of
another kind in the system, Budd
says. "It can be a very efficient
system because there is nobody
between the farmer and the
consumer, but there's one place it is
not efficient." With 3.5 acres of
cultivated land (plus little pockets
here and there of things like the
Jerusalem Artichokes he plants down
by the bush) he is too large to be a
typical gardener, but smaller than a
commercial market gardener, so it
means he doesn't have efficiencies of
scale. He is constantly switching
from one job to another. Equipment
needs are small but finding
equipment of the proper scale for the
operation requires some scrounging.
He's fine tuning his skills in
stretching the season out longer. He
has built a rudimentary greenhouse
for starting vegetables, as well as
cold frames, along the south of the
shed but "what we really need would
be a decent greenhouse". This could
be financed through the membership,
he says.
