The Rural Voice, 1993-06, Page 43Water Matters
and scenic trails are owned and
managed by Conservation
Authorities and are open to the
public, often free of charge. Your
favourite fishing hole, campground
or swimming beach may have to be
sold to the highest bidder. Chances
are, once the sale is made, the
public will no longer have access to
these natural areas. New owners
may want to harvest the timber, fill
in previously protected wetlands, or
change the present land use to fit
their own agenda. Without an
understanding of the possible
effects of such practices, water
quality and quantity can be greatly
disturbed as well as flora, fauna and
fish populations put in potential
jeopardy.
Water quality sampling and
improvement programs established
to protect public health may also be
cancelled. Pastimes such as
swimming would become more of
an "at your own risk" activity.
Without tree planting assistance
programs, it may also be impossible
to "hug a tree" unless you buy stock
from a private nursery.
Sounds rather depressing,
doesn't it? If you care, make your
feelings known to the offices listed
below, or to your Member of
Provincial Parliament. Every
outcry will help.
