Pesticide container
recycling program
back in June
The successful pesticide container
recycling program will be expanded
to 51 sites across Ontario in June, and
again in October.
Plastic or metal containers up to
23 litres capacity will be accepted at
the collection sites. All containers
will be inspected to ensure they are
triple -washed or jet -rinsed and
emptied. Containers not properly
cleaned will be refused.
Last year a pilot project was held
at six collection sites in southwestern
Ontario in June and October. "The
pilot project was received positively
by farmers, with an average of 5,000
containers collected per site," says
Dave Latter, chairman of the Ontario
Pesticide Container Management
Committee. "Less than one per cent
of the containers delivered by farmers
to the pilot sites were refused because
they were not adequately cleaned."
Latter said the 51 sites chosen for
this year should allow farmers, on
average, not to drive more than 20
miles to deliver empty containers for
recycling "We expect strong farmer
support for the expanded program,"
said Jeff Wilson, AgCare chairman.
"With so many municipalities
refusing the empty pesticide
containers at landfill sites, recycling
them is a much better solution than
having to bum or bury them on the
farm." United Agri -Products of
Dorchester will operate the sites.
From June 21 to 25 and October
12 to 15 containers will be collected
at Lucknow District Co-op,
Sprucedale Agromart in Hanover,
North Wellington Co-op at Mount
Forest, and Shelburne Co-op at
Shelburne among other sites.
From June 28 to July 2 and
October 19 to 22 the collection sites
in the region will be: Lakeside Grain
and Feed, Conklin site, Thedford;
Cook's, Centralia; Mid -Huron
Landfill Site, Holmesville; Topnotch
Feeds, Milverton; Waterloo County
Supplies Co-op, Elmira and
Sprucedale Agromart, Tara. 0
