cover it with dust sheets, drop cloths
or plastic sheets. Make sure all walls
to be painted or papered are washed
down to get rid of any grease. Paint
that is applied to dirty walls will only
crack or peel. Avoid painting in
artificial Tight — you won't be able to
see if you are covering the surface
properly or if you are leaving streaks.
If you must paint in bad light rig up as
much extra lighting as possible to
shine directly on your work surface.
This extra wattage will also help keep
you warm while you work! Make
sure all cracks and holes are filled and
sanded down. Unless your windows
are permanently sealed make sure that
they are painted open. If you've hired
a painter don't let him leave before he
has demonstrated that the window
will open freely. Put masking tape on
the floor around the bottom of the
baseboard. This will allow you to
paint right to the bottom of the wood
without staining the flooring.
A friend of mine lent me a book
the other day that I was quite taken
with, and would like to suggest as
reading material if you are interested
in all the new paint techniques that
are being used today. It is "Colour: A
Stroke of Brilliance". It is printed by
Benjamin Moore Paints. It is an
excellent reference for almost any
question you may have on colours.
They have step by step instructions
for striped wall finishes (with paint),
plaid (two -directional dragging),
crackle finish for wood, smooshing
(not smooching), tri -roller technique,
and many more. They have helpful
pictures ... much easier to understand
when you can see the finished result.
I am sure it will be available where
Benjamin Moore Paints are sold. The
cost is $9.95 and well worth the
money.
If you have any decorating
questions I can help you with please
