March 6, 1993
March came in like a lamb and the
sun is still shining, so who knows, it
just may be here to stay. It's great
weather for calving as long as they
can keep from sliding into those wet
holes left by the thawing.
Bull sales are coming up
everywhere, so now is the time to
pick next year's herd sire. Every
cattle operation has its own
characteristics and management
techniques. That's why we see such
a good selection across this Rainy
River District. Each producer has
chosen the things they do because it
works best for their operation.
The RRFA met at the home of
President Rick Boersma on March 4.
Attending that evening were Rick and
Sue, Linda Armstrong, Mike
Zimmerman, Amos Brielman, Wayne
Flatt, Jac Vandenbrand, Tammy
Hunsperger and Shirley Morrish.
Rick and Wayne reported on their
meeting with Natural Resources
Ministry Howard Hampton. Again
the ongoing problem of wolves and
bear and the district came up. We
only ask for proper compensation, not
banish them from the face of the
earth.
Tammy reported on the new logo
and expressed disappointment that
very few people are taking advantage
of its use and that it was a big
expense for the organization. Logos
are a trend at the moment and maybe
it just hasn't caught on yet. It was
decided by everyone present that we
really do have to cut expenses.
The Rainy River Safety
Association had a meeting and
elected Rick Neilson as President,
Wayne Flatt as Vice -President,
Shirley Teeple as Secretary and
Alwine Teeple as Treasurer. They
are looking for an appropriate way to
get the message of SAFETY across to
the public in all facets of farm life
without pointing a finger at anyone in
particular.
Amos reported for the Soil and
Crop Association. Rick Neilson and
Bill Irvine will travel to the annual
meeting in Toronto on March 15.
Rick is going to try and fill Bill's
shoes as the long-time Safety
Association Representative for our
area. Bill has done a terrific job all
these years.
The Fair board, now known as the
Rainy River Valley Agricultural
Society, is looking for a group or
individual who may be interested in
removing the old Grandstand from
the Fairgrounds to make way for the
new facility. The committee hopes to
find ways to make use of the
Grandstand, possibly year-round.
Jack Vandenbrand reporting for
the Milk Committee announced that
there are 32 milk producers in this
District and of these 18 will be
receiving awards at the annual
meeting on March 18. There are
eight Gold awards and 10 General
awards to be presented.
Linda Armstrong reported for the
Rainy River Cattlemen's Association.
Kim Jo Bliss is the new President.
Kim Cornell has left his position as
Regional Director to take on the
position as a Director with the B.I.O.
Committee. Past President Wade
Desserre is hoping to devote more
time to the Minnesota Port -of -entry
issue. He also became engaged to
Miss Kim Hunsperger near
Valentine's Day. Congratulations on
your upcoming wedding in May, Kim
and Wade!
The entertainment report was
given by Shirley Morrish. The
February 14 Potluck Luncheon and
Skating Party was a success. Over
100 people of every age spent the
afternoon eating, visiting friends,
skating, watching local home movies,
games, and trying to win the door
prizes donated by some very
generous people.
Winners were: $20 gift certificate
from Stratton Community Store —
Tammy Flatt; turkey from Fairway
Store, Emo — David Donaldson;
handmade wooden basket from Bill
and Marg Govier — Adrienne
McCullough; Hereford lawn
ornament made by Bill and Marg —
Jeff Hyatt; heart -shaped box of
chocolates from Willow -Mor Farms
— Nathalie Donaldson; toy tractor
from DeGagne Equipment — Janice
Hoskins.
The guessing game, a jar of
cinnamon heart candies, was won by
Nathalie Donaldson (there were 808,
she guessed 812). The eldest skater
on the ice was Ken McKinnon, 57,
and the youngest skater on the ice
was David Donaldson, two and a half
years. The prizes for these lucky
people were donatcd by Willow -Mor
Farms. The RRFA wishes to thank
the Municipality of Chapple for
donating $100 towards the Ice and
Hall rental, to Vacationland Dairy at
Kenora for donating the milk for the
meal, to Stratton Meat Processors for
their donation of a ham for the lunch,
to Fairway Store for two turkeys, one
for the draw and one for the lunch, to
Stan and Linda Armstrong for the
loan of their great movies, to the
Hunspergers for the use of their TV,
VCR and movies. I would personally
like to thank Tom, Wayne, Marilyn,
Wade and Kim for helping to
decorate and prepare for this event.
We missed you Stan and Linda.
Hope your eye operation was
successful, Stan.
We need your able bodies to assist
us with the Spring Dinner and Dance,
April 17 at the Barwick Recreation
Centre. There's an excellent speaker
lined up and great music after the
Fabulous Feast. Tickets are available
from any one of the RRFA Directors.
Next RRFA meeting is April 1 at
the Ag Office at Emo, 7:30 p.m.
Don't forget the Bull and Heifer
Sale on Saturday, April 3 at the
Stratton Sales Barn. Contact Ken
Fisher at 807-482-2747 for further
details.

the snow that's left lying around — it
makes my garden look just as nice as
my neighbour's."0
