Home Decorating
Maybe cold weather will do the job
I have always wanted a room in
our home that we could use for our
hobbies. It would be so convenient
to be able to start a project and not
have to put it
all away
because
company was
corning and we
wanted to eat at
the dining
room table.
There were
two rooms in
our attic that
we felt would
make a great
space for an
easel, a sewing
desk, and craft
and painting
table. All that needed to be done
was to remove a wall, insulate,
drywall, install a new window,
electrical outlets, and lights, and
build a few storage spots for all the
buried treasures that were buried
under all the wall-to-wall "stuff'
that had been taken to the attic over
the years. It sounded simple
enough when you said it quickly,
and of course we would do the
labour ourselves so it wouldn't cost
much!
I prefer to call this new room a
"Studio". My hope was that my
husband, who is an artist, would
fall for the name and work at break-
neck pace to complete our special
room. This little tactic hasn't
proven to be too successful. I can't
imagine why he wouldn't just finish
it now so I would quit what he likes
to refer to as "nagging" him. We
were moving right along but as luck
would have it the weather changed
for a few days and he was hit with
spring fever. He dropped the sand-
paper and drywall tools like a hot
potato ... I knew where he went by
following the drywall dust trail.
I, too, have spring fever and
would like to do some "Spring
Cleaning". Don't get me wrong .. .
if I could avoid it I would, but there
is a low -hanging haze of drywall
dust throughout the entire house.
There is no need to look for a pen
and paper to leave a phone message
here ... just got() the nearest flat
surface and use your finger. The
message can be erased and within
12 hours you can leave more notes.
After this experience I now know
why there is so much wood -look
wall panelling installed in older
homes!
I had lots of different ideas as to
how I would decorate this great
space. It is so bright and cheery
with a low casement window facing
the east under the eaves and a
double -hung window looking out
into a big old red maple to the
south. The now L-shaped room has
such possibilities. The walls will
be painted white so as not to
interfere with artwork. I have
found a very pretty old-fashioned
looking chintz print that I will put
on the windows, chairs and a
dressing screen. Before I tore up
the old flooring and saw what a
state the board floor was in, the
plan had been to sand it down,
varnish and stencil a pattern on it.
Oh well, back to the drawing board.
My choice is to have an easy -
care floor that cleans up with a
broom. There were so many holes
and wide cracks in the old floor that
Ed would never get another sewing
pin in his foot again. That's
another good reason why I need a
place to sew! I must mention that
as another benefit to completing
this project soon. I just can't for
the life of me figure how the
creation of his row -crop sprayer
would take precedence over "our
room".
I want spring to arrive as soon as
the next guy, but maybe if this cold
weather stays a few more days, he
will be forced back indoors by
Mother Nature herself. I hope next
time to be able to say all this mess
was worth it!
'Til next time.0
