Bob Ulch
Russeldale Farm
Equipment Ltd.
Mitchell
Main lines: Massey Ferguson,
White New Idea, AGCO White
Business trends: Ulch feels the
investment tax credit will create
increased sales activity. Buyers are
going farther to get good prices,
however, and aren't supporting the
dealer who supplies parts and service
best. Customers, he says, realize
dealers must cut down on inventory
and they will have to make buying
decisions further in advance of the
season due to that smaller inventory.
"I also find customers are sitting at
home more and phone shopping and
dealers have to visit them to make a
sale."
When there's one of the
increasingly frequent buyouts or
amalgamations of farm machinery
companies the situation makes
customers nervous and sales get
slower for a while, Ulch says. "I
think it depends on the dealer's
acceptance, a certain amount. If the
dealer feels comfortable then the
customers accept the change more
quickly."
Ulch sees the trend to
amalgamations continuing but can't
predict which direction this will take.
"There is still an excess of
distributors and dealers."
How have the conditions of the
past year affected your
inventory?
"We have reduced inventory and
attempted to keep inventory that turns
more quickly," Ulch says.
Lawn and garden equipment
carried: Snapper and Massey
Ferguson.
What's new in lawn and garden
equipment?
Ulch says there are not many changes
in these lines other than a change in
the marketing company for each line
with Snapper distributed through
Outdoor Products and Massey
Ferguson through AGCO.
