Business trends: Over the past
few years over -production and
surplus inventory have created a
buyers' market. Harkness predicts
shortages in the future. Most
inventories are depleted and
manufacturers have cut back on
production. Purchasers who order
early will get better deals. Last
minute ordering will be more
difficult and costs of getting the
product to consumers at the last
minute will be more costly, if it can
be located.
The trend to main -line
amalgamations has had very little
effect on the company. Harkness,
however, predicts amalgamations
will continue. "The grain storage
business has had more problems
with companies dropping out of
business than through
amalgamations. We have seen some
major players discontinue
production and financial reports on
some of those left indicate there
will be further reductions. Buyers
should ensure they are purchasing
from established manufacturers and
established dealers who can back
their products up with service and
parts five or 10 years down the
road."
