The Rural Voice, 1993-04, Page 27transplanted in the spring as a plug or
transplant.
That drives up the cost, Scheifele
says, involving input costs of $500-
$600 an acre to establish a crop and
get it to harvest, almost half that from
transplants.
Research at Delhi •has been
working on cutting those costs. Using
a precision seeder the evening
primrose can be planted at a rate of 1
kg of seed per hectare in early August
(the high soil temperature seems to
help overcome dormancy). The plant
is then at the rosette seedling stage,
like a little dandelion, when winter
arrives. In spring the plants are ready
to start growing, bolting and
producing flowers and seed after the
heat hits in June.
There can also be winter seeding
at the end of November or early
December so the seed remains in the
soil for the winter and sprouts in the
spring. Both the summer and late fall
seeding seem to give a better
production than the spring transplant
system, Scheifele says. Beside
expense, the transplants have the
problem of needing to be out very
early so they can still get a couple of
touches of frost, which helps them to
bolt. It can mean problems if there is
a wet spring and the transplants aren't
out early enough. The crop, if it is
planted too late, can look good but
won't bolt and produce seed and will
have to be left until the next season.
Stevia could provide a sweet
alternative to sugar, but so far no
manufacturer is interested.
