Marketing also brings out Holroyd's other largest beef: the Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers Marketing Board which dictates price but has no ability to control imports, he says. "They charge us $30,000 a year (membership) for absolutely nothing." Last spring, he claims, the marketing board cost his company $65,000 in a single week when it dropped the price when Bruce Tropical could have sold all its tomatoes at a premium price. In fact, he says, retailers consistently put high mark-ups on Bruce tomatoes because they see it as a premium quality. If the retail mark-up was 30-40 per cent there might be more tomatoes sold but the retailers routinely mark the tomatoes up 75 to 100 per cern and still sell out, he says. The limitations of lighting and the problems with the marketing board have led Bruce Tropical to explore other crops like cherry tomatoes, bell peppers and cucumbers. Hemmed in by higher costs that prevent full production to meet a known demand, and pricing controls that keep him from getting a premium price people are willing to pay, Holroyd sounds just like most farmers in his frustrations. The topic of weather, however, is one traditional farmers' complaint that doesn't enter his conversation.0
